Persuasion

by Jane Austen

Fiction

Persuasion is the last novel completed by Jane Austen, published posthumously in December 1817 along with Northanger Abbey. Written while Austen was in declining health, it is often considered her most mature and emotionally resonant work.

The story follows Anne Elliot, a sensible and loyal young woman who, eight years earlier, was persuaded by her family and friends to break off her engagement to Captain Frederick Wentworth, then a man of uncertain prospects. When Wentworth returns to her social circle — now wealthy and successful — Anne must confront her lingering feelings and the consequences of the advice she once followed.

A quiet and deeply moving novel about second chances, constancy, and the courage to follow one’s own heart, Persuasion offers Austen’s most tender love story and a bittersweet reflection on the passage of time.
