Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a novel by English author Lewis Carroll, first published in 1865 with illustrations by John Tenniel. Written for Alice Liddell, the young daughter of a friend, the book began as a story Carroll told during a boat trip on the Thames.

The story follows Alice, a curious young girl who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantastical underground world. There she encounters a series of strange and memorable characters — the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts — and navigates a landscape where logic is turned upside down and nothing is quite as it seems.

One of the most influential works of literary nonsense, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has been translated into nearly every language and adapted countless times for stage, film, and television. Its inventive wordplay, surreal imagery, and playful subversion of Victorian conventions have made it a beloved classic for readers of all ages.
