At the Mountains of Madness

by H. P. Lovecraft

Adventure Horror Science Fiction

A geologist recounts a scientific expedition to Antarctica that uncovered something no human was meant to find. Beyond a titanic mountain range higher than the Himalayas, the explorers discover the ruins of a city older than any civilization, built by beings that arrived on Earth when life itself was young.

Written in 1931 and first serialized in Astounding Stories in 1936, Lovecraft’s longest work takes the form of a desperate warning from Professor William Dyer of Miskatonic University, who hopes to prevent a follow-up expedition from venturing into the same forbidden territory. As Dyer and his colleague Danforth press deeper into the ancient city, deciphering its carved murals, they piece together the history of the Elder Things – and realize that something far worse may still lurk in the tunnels beneath the ice.

A landmark of cosmic horror and one of Lovecraft’s most fully realized works, At the Mountains of Madness remains a chilling meditation on humanity’s insignificance in an incomprehensibly old universe.
