A Room with a View

by E. M. Forster

Fiction

A Room with a View is a novel by English author E. M. Forster, first published in 1908. A social comedy set against the backdrop of Edwardian England and Florence, Italy, it is one of Forster’s most popular and accessible works.

The story follows Lucy Honeychurch, a young English woman who travels to Italy with her older cousin and chaperone. There she meets the free-spirited George Emerson, whose unconventional outlook challenges the rigid social expectations she has always known. Back in England, Lucy must choose between George and the cultured but passionless Cecil Vyse.

A witty and perceptive exploration of class, convention, and the tension between passion and propriety, A Room with a View has been adapted into a celebrated Merchant Ivory film and remains a cornerstone of early twentieth-century English literature.
