Meditations

by Marcus Aurelius

Philosophy

Meditations is a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD. Never intended for publication, these private notes — written in Greek during military campaigns on the northern frontier — form one of the most enduring works of Stoic philosophy.

Organized into twelve books, Meditations is not a systematic treatise but a collection of reflections on duty, mortality, self-discipline, and the nature of the universe. Marcus reminds himself to accept what he cannot change, to act justly regardless of circumstances, and to remember that fame, wealth, and even life itself are fleeting. “The universe is change; our life is what our thoughts make it.”

Written by the most powerful man in the ancient world, Meditations is remarkable for its humility and honesty. It has influenced philosophers, statesmen, and ordinary readers for nearly two thousand years, and remains one of the foundational texts of Western thought on how to live a good life.
