Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888) was an American novelist best known for Little Women, a semi-autobiographical story of four sisters growing up during the Civil War era. The novel's warmth, humor, and realistic portrayal of family life made it an immediate bestseller and an enduring classic. Alcott was also an abolitionist and feminist who served as a nurse during the Civil War.
