Marcus Aurelius
Roman, 121–180
Marcus Aurelius (121-180 AD) was Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 and the last of the so-called Five Good Emperors. A devoted practitioner of Stoic philosophy, he wrote his Meditations as private notes to himself during military campaigns on the empire's northern frontier. Never intended for publication, these reflections on duty, mortality, and self-discipline became one of the foundational texts of Western philosophy. Marcus remains the supreme example of the philosopher-king ideal.
