Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894) was a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer best known for Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Treasure Island defined the popular image of pirates and buried treasure, while Jekyll and Hyde became one of the most famous explorations of duality in human nature. Despite chronic illness, Stevenson traveled widely and spent his final years in Samoa.
