Great Expectations

by Charles Dickens

Fiction

Great Expectations is a novel by Charles Dickens, first published in serial form in 1860-61. It tells the story of Pip, an orphan raised by his harsh sister and her gentle blacksmith husband in the Kent marshes, whose life is transformed by a mysterious benefactor who grants him the means to become a London gentleman.

As Pip rises in society, he becomes entangled with a cast of unforgettable characters: the reclusive Miss Havisham, forever frozen in her wedding dress amid the ruins of her banquet hall; the cold and beautiful Estella, raised to break men’s hearts; and Abel Magwitch, the escaped convict Pip once helped on the marshes as a terrified child. Through Pip’s journey from shame about his humble origins to hard-won self-knowledge, Dickens crafts a searching examination of class, ambition, loyalty, and what it truly means to be a gentleman.

Widely regarded as one of Dickens’ finest achievements, Great Expectations combines gripping storytelling with a depth of character and moral insight that has captivated readers for over a century and a half.
